Read & Lead
The
goal of Read & Lead is to model consistent reading behavior.
Children and parents are encouraged to read together and record
their reading times during this ten-week period. Parents match
their child’s reading. Prizes are sent home with the children as
certain reading levels are reached. At the end of the program those
participants who complete their reading goal of 1000 minutes (800
minutes for kindergarten) will receive a Read & Lead
Medal, specially designed for Harbor Heights.
While the program is voluntary, we hope that all families will
choose to participate. Last year, the majority of Harbor Heights
participated with over 80% completing the 1000 minute level (800
minutes for kindergarten)! Our goal this year is to have more
participants and beat that number! Our wonderful teachers also
encourage Read & Lead because they see first hand the improvements
and enthusiasm in student reading during this program.
The Read & Lead program began January 12 and runs
until the end of March.
Remember, the goal of Read & Lead is to model consistent reading
behavior. Don't rush to finish early or wait to the last week to
start. Spending 20 minutes reading per day for each student and
adult will allow you to finish 1000 minutes of reading in 10 weeks.
As you
complete a Read & Lead recording sheet, return it to school. The Read &
Lead volunteers will log the time and send home the log sheet for the
next level. For example, when the 100/200 minute sheet is returned, a
500/600 minute sheet will be sent home, (since you received the 300/400
minute sheet with the initial packet). You will always have a sheet to work on.
Sheets will be available online at the school website. Print out and
label with the correct minute level. Please return the sheets in
order. We record and return sheets on Thursdays. Prizes
are
awarded on Fridays.
“The amount of time a child spends reading outside of school is the best predictor of academic growth. Those who scored in the 50th percentile on standardized reading tests spent an average of 7 minutes a day reading books outside the classroom, while those who scored in the 90th percentile spent close to 20 minutes a day on outside reading.”
Richard Anderson
Director of the Center for Reading , University of Illinois
Recording sheets are due each Thursday.
